Between 1960 and 1980, Michael Kunze established himself as the most successful German songwriter of the 20th century. Along with countless pop music artists from German-speaking countries, many international superstars such as Nana Mouskouri, Silver Convention, Herbie Mann, Julio Iglesias, Gilbert Becaud, and Sister Sledge, owe him their greatest hits.

At the height of his career, Michael left the pop music scene and wrote several books. His New York Times Bestseller "Highroad to the Stake" examines the madness of witch hunts in late 16th century Europe.

Returning to show business, Michael Kunze penned the German versions of some of the most successful musicals in the world: Evita, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, A Chorus Line, Little Shop of Horrors, Into the Woods, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Sunset Boulevard, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, Mamma Mia, Elton John's Aida, and Wicked.

The doors to Michael's international superstardom opened wide with the advent of his first original drama musical "Elisabeth" (music by Sylvester Levay). So far, over 9 million people have seen his story of the former Austrian Empress. The following works "Dance of the Vampires", "Mozart!", "Rebecca" and "Marie Antoinette" rose quickly to become huge successes in top theaters of numerous European capital cities. Michael also wrote the libretto to Gershon Kingsley's opera "Raoul".

Michael Kunze resides in Hamburg, Germany, together with his wife Roswitha and their dog Aska.
